Trust in the Swedish monarchy remains high despite a growing support for republics in recent years. According to the SOM Institute's latest survey, 54% of Swedes still believe that the monarchy should be kept. This number is even lower when it comes to introducing a republic with a popularly elected president – only 11% of Swedes supported such a proposal.
The increasing popularity of the Swedish monarchy can be attributed to Crown Princess Victoria who is the most popular public figure ever measured in the survey with +28 on a scale that goes from -50 to +50. This makes her more popular than former US President Barack Obama and Jens Stoltenberg.
Ulrika Andersson, researcher at the SOM institute in Gothenburg and responsible for the study, believes that “even the people who believe that the monarchy should be abolished generally have a positive image of the crown princess, something that must provide good conditions for a future accession to the throne”.
