Drone Attacks in Moscow and Crimea

The Russian capital of Moscow and the Crimean peninsula were both attacked with drones on the night of Monday. According to the Kremlin, the assaults were a “Ukrainian terrorist act”, while the Ukrainian government has not claimed responsibility. After the attacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed retaliation, prompting further speculation of a possible war between the two countries.

Putin Vows Retaliation

At approximately 04:00 local time, two buildings in Moscow were damaged in a drone attack, according to Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. One of the buildings was located just a few hundred meters from Russia’s Ministry of Defense. Remains from one of the drones were later found nearby. The other drone hit an office building in the south of Moscow. The buildings did not suffer major damage, and no people were killed in the attack.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that 17 drones were shot down over Crimea. According to the Russian-installed governor of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, one of the drones destroyed an oil depot on the peninsula. Additionally, a residential building was damaged by falling drone debris. The authorities in Kiev have not commented on these claims.

Tension Escalates Between Russia and Ukraine

The attacks occurred just one day after a large-scale attack on the port city of Odessa, which left two people dead and around 20 injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised retaliation for this attack. Later that night, Odessa was shelled again by drones, which destroyed a grain shed and injured at least six people.

Risk of Full-Scale War

The drone attacks come after Russia announced it would no longer extend its grain deal with Ukraine, which allowed Ukrainian grain exports across the Black Sea. As tensions continue to rise between Moscow and Kiev, it is unclear how Putin will respond to these latest strikes and what effect they will have on future relations between the two countries.

It is evident that tensions between Russia and Ukraine are escalating at an alarming rate. Although both governments have been tight-lipped about these latest drone attacks, their refusal to take responsibility speaks volumes about what is to come. If neither side backs down, there is a real danger that this conflict could spiral out of control and result in full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine.
