Russian Foreign Ministry Blames Ukraine for Attack on Crimean Bridge

 Explosion on Krim Bridge

Russian authorities stopped traffic on the Krim Bridge early this morning. Russian-appointed Crimean governor Sergei Aksionov initially called the incident an “extraordinary event”, but later indicated that he suspected Ukraine of being responsible. This suspicion was echoed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who wrote in her Telegram channel that “[it was] carried out by Kiev, who are the ones who make the decisions. The US and the UK make these initiatives possible.

Russia Blames Ukraine

Ukrainian media reported that two explosions were heard from the bridge last night at 03:00. An image taken shortly afterwards purported to show the damage to the Krim Bridge. According to the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, two people died and one was injured in the incident. It concerns a pair of parents and their daughter who were traveling in a car with Russian number plates. The daughter is now being treated in hospital with serious injuries.

Two People Dead, One Injured

The Krim Bridge is a vital link for transporting supplies to Russian soldiers in Ukraine and is a prestige project of Putin’s. In October 2022, the bridge was damaged by a truck bomb that Moscow said was behind Ukraine. Kyiv denied responsibility for the attack.

Krim Bridge Vital Link for Russian Troops

The Russian state news agency Tass writes that the Crimean authorities will help tourists affected by the suspension of traffic on the bridge. The incident serves as a reminder of how tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain, even after more than seven years since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Tension Remains Between Russia and Ukraine

The ultimate responsibility for this most recent explosion remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: this is yet another example of how political tensions can have real-world implications for innocent people caught in the crossfire.

Tragedy Serves as Reminder of Conflict

The tragedy on the Krim Bridge reminds us that the effects of conflict can still be felt, even for those who live far away from conflict zones. We must stay informed about what is happening in the world and work to ensure that all people can live in peace and stability, no matter where they call home.

We Must Strive for Peace
