Västtrafik Cracks Down on Fare Skippers: Fair Rides for a Sustainable City

Starting February 5th, Västtrafik is taking a stand against fare evasion with a double-pronged approach

Zone A Focus:

  • Civilian Ticket Inspectors: Easily identifiable by their IDs, these inspectors will be joining the patrol in Gothenburg, Mölndal, Partille, and Öckerö (Zone A) to ensure everyone pays their fare.
  • Why Zone A? Trams and specific bus routes here lack onboard validation, leading to higher rates of fare evasion.

Regional Expansion:

  • Triple the Checks: Västtrafik is ramping up ticket inspections across the entire region, aiming to increase the annual checks from 3 million to a whopping 11 million.

This is not about collecting fines, but about creating a fair and sustainable system for everyone

  • Focus on Prevention: Encouraging everyone to buy tickets is the ultimate goal, not issuing surcharges. Fare revenue is crucial for maintaining and improving public transport for all.
  • Combating a Regional Issue: Estimates suggest that around 12% of passengers across the region currently skip paying their fare.

By working together, we can ensure a smooth, reliable, and sustainable public transport system for Gothenburg and beyond. So next time you hop on board, remember to grab your ticket and be part of the solution!
