Erling Haaland Chasing Ronaldo’s Goal Record in Champions League

Erling Haaland is on the hunt for Ronaldo’s goal record in the Champions League, but above all he wants to take his Manchester City to the final. He has already made history in the Premier League.

Now Manchester City’s Erling Braut Haaland is chasing another historical record: the goal record in the Champions League, which is primarily about the semi-final against Real Madrid.

The star needs six goals to knock Cristiano Ronaldo off the record throne. In the 76th minute, he volleyed the ball and Manchester City won the quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich 3–0. With the goal in the second leg, 1-1, Norwegian Erling Braut Haaland has twelve Champions League goals this season.

Which means he is already two better than his last record of 10 goals for Dortmund in 2020-2021 – and ‘just’ five behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s CL record of 17 from 2013-2014.

Haaland, who needed 27 games to reach the record mark of 35 goals in his debut season in the Premier League, is of course thinking of updating European football’s governing body Uefa’s goal tally for a Champions League season. But it is not something that he has previously wanted to talk about.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the striker has said that his focus is first and foremost on the team and that the next game should bring three points.

– I can’t think about all the records all the time, then I would have gone crazy, he said after the record goal against West Ham on 3 May.

If Manchester City reach the final, which will be played in the Turkish capital Istanbul on June 10, Haaland will have three games to score the goals needed to knock Ronaldo off the record throne.

However, the task will not be the easiest. City face Real Madrid, and the La Liga side are in the semi-finals for the 10th time in 12 seasons, chasing the club’s sixth title since 2014.

In the second Champions League semi-final, which will be played on Wednesday, Milan rivals Inter and Milan will face each other. 20 years ago, the matches finished 0–0 and 1–1, resulting in Milan progressing to the final on away goals and then winning at Old Trafford against another fellow Serie A side, Juventus, on penalties.
